Wavelet Compression

Definition

The Wavelet Compression Project (WCP) defines a set wavelet-based encoding and decoding algorithms for compression of forecast model data and satellite imagery. The WCP supports multiple projects within and outside of the Technology Outreach Branch including FX-Net and Gridded FX-Net.

History

The WCP was initiated in the year 2000, spearheaded by Dr. Ning Wang, in support of the FX-Net thin client by compressing satellite imagery to minimize product request latency and maximize bandwidth utilization.  In 2007 the Gridded FX-Net project leveraged the WCP to use the precision-controlled version of the product, to compress by either error or size tolerance.
